Me Before You was released in South Africa on Friday. A friend and I went to watched the film yesterday. I loved the book, like most people I know. I also knew it was going to be a good film. The fact that I love the cast and I’ve been watching the trailer on average of once a week for the past couple of months is proof.
Me Before You
And yet it goes deeper than that for me. To me it means, people get to make their own choices. Their choices aren’t always what you would have chosen and because of what has been happening at home, I knew I was going to have a little melt down. Just like I knew it had to happen. My head is filled with thoughts and emotions I don’t want to deal with and I’ve been doing about my daily life feeling indifferent and pretending I am unaffected.
The good news is, I had my little melt down. I’ve cried, not for Louise Clark and Will Traynor, but for K and I. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I love him. I don’t have to deny or question it and that is okay. I know that I care for him deeply and despite all of these things I need to look out for my well being and in turn for the well being of our kids.
Making life choices is hard, especially when you are hurting. Making decisions when your heart and your mind is contradicting each other is near impossible. Living with someone else’s choices is harder. But all you can do, is to keep going, even when you feel numb or when you don’t feel like it. You get up and figure it out.
“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.”
Living Life Fully
It isn’t often I find a song that resonates with me as much as Ed Sheeran’s song, Photograph. I see it as a reminder that loving hurts and that it gets easier. Love isn’t something to forget or pretend it didn’t happen, because it is good. It was really good at times and living life fully is to acknowledge and celebrate those moments.
There were a couple of things I thought should have been in the film that wasn’t. But it could be, because I value Louisa’s story more than the actual love story.
